Creole cuisine is famous for all the different types and dishes and specially street foods!
Dholl Puri
Trying the famous dholl puri most commonly called as ‘Dal Puri’ should definitely be on your list. Dholl Puri is a basically a thin pancake made of yellow split peas prepared on a pan. It is then served stuffed with curries mostly “Gros Pois” (bean curry) and the famous Mauritian “Rougaille” (a tomato curry). Sides to this dish are mainly Achard (Pickled vegetables) and ‘satini’ (chutney). Dholl Puri can be called as the national dish of Mauritius which is a must for all locals and visitors!
Fish Vindaye
Known as ‘Vindaye Poisson’ in the local language, this dish is made of pickled fried fish which is then mixed in a tangy paste made up of onions, ginger, garlic, turmeric, mustard seeds, curry leaves and finely chopped coriander. Fish Vindaye is best enjoyed with a local French Baguette bread!
Boulette (Dim Sum)
Mauritian style steamed dumplings are made up of chayote, chicken, meat, seafood or vegetables. It is served infused in a chicken broth, sprinkled with freshly chopped spring onions and chilli paste as per your taste. Boulette are easily available across the island and are really delicious, definitely worth a try!
Bol Renverser(upside down bowl)
Bol Renverser is a speciality of the chines-creole cuisine and is one of the most famous dishes of the island. It consists of a curry made up of onions, capsicum, seafood, chicken, algae and several Chinese sauces . The dish is arranged in a bowl, and a fried egg forms the dome of the dish which is then turned around on a plate hence coming up with the name ‘upside down bowl.
Gato Piments
These are tiny crisp ball made up of split peas, seasoned with spring onions, onions, finely chopped green chilies and coriander. They are best served with a warm baguette along with either butter or a tangy chili sauce.
Tropical Fruit salad
This salad is nothing like you would be expecting, but it definitely going to water your mouth. It is usually a mix of fruits such as pineapple, rose apple, mango, golden apple and often also cucumber. It is then dipped in a sauce made up of tamarind, chilli, salt, vinegar, sugar.
Mauritian style Briyani
The Mauritian Biryani is way different from Indian and Pakistani Biryani. It is made of marinated chicken, potato and rice cooked with special briyani species. It is best served alongside a tangy tamarind chutney, cucumber salad and tomatoes salad. It is certainly another dish to be added to your list.
Mine frite(Fried Noodles)
Mine frite is made of freshly prepared noodles which is then stir fried along with a meat of your choice which could be chicken, lamb, beef or seafood along with egg. It is usually seasoned with soy sauce together with different Chinese sauces along with garlic chives.
Millionaire salad/ Salad palmist
This is usually made of finely chopped heart of palm tree, leaves of lettuce, smoked seafood mainly marlin and prawns in a tangy salad dressing. It is a great choice for seafood lovers and salad lovers.
7-curry and Ti puri
This dish is usually served in Hindu weddings but can also be obtained in some restaurants or snacks throughout the Island. The dish usually consist of 7 different curries usually butter beans, taro leaves, Mauritian Rougaille, banana curry, Gato piment curry, jackfruit curry along with a tangy and sweet tamarind paste. It is usually served with a puri- which is made of flour deep fried. This indigenous dish is a must on your visit to mauritius.
