Things good to know when you rent a car in Mauritius

• Driving license requirements
  You can easily drive around the island with an overseas valid license irrespective of your country of origin You will require an International driving license only if you plan to stay for more than four weeks.
• Parking your car
  In the capital city of Port Louis, you can park your car on the roadside for a maximum of two hours. You will need to buy a parking permit at a gas station and place it in a visible place of your windshield to avoid fine. There are many gas stations throughout the island and some are also open 24/7. In smaller towns, parking is free. You can also choose to park your car in a larger parking area for a fee.
• Rush hours
  Traffic is heaviest for 7:30 am to 9:30 am and from 15:00pm to 18:00 pm. The entrance and exits of cities are congested at these time intervals. It is advisable to be on the road 2 hours earlier if you plan to move around the island.
• Speed restrictions
  In the towns and cities the speed limit is 40km/hr and on open roads it goes upto 80km/hr. Motorways allow a maximum speed of 110km/hr. There are also speed cameras in place throughout the island which will flash at you when you do not respect the speed limits. There are currently no toll roads in Mauritius hence no fees as such. There are often surprise alcohol checks and you are not allowed to have more than 50mg of alcohol in your blood while driving. Mauritius follows driving on the left hand side. Using hand held devices while driving is an offence punishable by laws in force in Mauritius.
